This small carved, gilt-wood mirror of Chippendale design illustrates the English Rococo period of the middle years of the 18th century. The small oval looking glass is in a moulded inner frame carved en rocaille and surrounded by ribbon tied crossed boughs of acanthus.

Thomas Chippendale (1718-1789), is arguably the most famous of English furniture makers. From humble beginnings in Yorkshire he moved to London and exploited the prevailing fashion for the Rococo from his St Martins Lane establishment and published his Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director in 1754.
