This gilt-wood looking glass forms a design transition between the reign of Queen Anne and the Georgian period. The plain, double arched and moulded frame is enriched with a shell carved crest flanked by acanthus leaves and husks.

The plain moulded sides of this mirror might have originally intended this example to be placed on a pier wall between two windows. The deeply carved shell cresting is flanked to each side by scrolling acanthus leaves and trailing husks. The scallop shell has a rich symbolism, it recalls the birth of Venus and has become the badge of pilgrims to the shrine of James The Greater at Compostella in Spain.
