An important Regency design carved wood pedestal desk in the manner of Thomas Tatham. The top is symmetrically divided and leathered. The frieze, of Greek Key, conceals two large secret drawers, which are key operated. The bases being of two seated griffins, a symbol of courage and watchfulness on low rectangular plinths.

Charles Heathcote Tatham (1772-1842) an architect and designer was instrumental in the creation of the Regency style. Tatham studied in Rome between 1794 and 1797 where he made a number of drawings of ancient monuments. A drawing of a table base in the Vatican by Tatham dated 1799 shows an almost identical griffin that has inspired this desk.
