Code: M59 - George III Hepplewhite Oval Mirror
This Neo-Classical style looking glass displays all the hallmarks of Robert Adam. The oval mirror plate is contained within a moulded frame carved with gadroons and beads divided by a fluted ground. The classical urn cresting with a spray of wheat ears and flowers rests upon gathered acanthus leaves with trailing garlands of husks uniting the urn handles and flowing through the leaf scrolls to each side and joining the sides of the frame. The apron formed of double scrolling branches and leaves is decorated with pateae and supported by a leaf spray. Some mirror plates for looking glasses, especially large frames for important commissions, were often imported from France . It has been estimated that in 1770, between £60,000 and £100,000 worth of glass was being imported into England officially.
