George II Claw Foot Side Table

A carved gilt-wood side table in the George II tradition. The rectangular marble top sits above a Vitruvian scrolled frieze raised on cabriole legs. The legs are carved with acanthus leaf capped knees and with scrolled and leaf carved ear brackets raised on claw and ball feet.

Whilst tables of this type were normally made in walnut or mahogany, gilded examples were favoured for state apartments. The marble tops that were used for this form of table were very often brought from Italy at great expense. In 1766 Gavin Hamilton, the artist and noted antiquary, wrote to Lady Spencer, 'The antique marble slabs of verde antique will come to fifty five crowns a piece'. A year later they were still not delivered!
