Code: M45 - George I Gesso Mirror

This carved gilt-wood and gesso looking glass is in the style of George I. The oblong mirror plate is within a moulded frame carved with interlaced strap work and leaves on a punched ground. The shaped cresting has a 'plume' cresting raised on a lambrequin carved with tassels on a textured ground.

The textured, or punched ground is also known as 'pounced'. Gesso, a mixture of ground chalk mixed with glue is an integral part of the gilding process. To achieve the textured effect, a round-headed punch is used to stamp the gesso before it dries.
