Code: M44-M - Chippendale Pier Glass - Medium

This gilt-wood looking glass is carved in a light and open, Rococo style frame. The mirror plate is set within vigorously drawn C scrolls, acanthus leaves, flowers and leaves and with an acanthus leaf spray cresting.

The lightness of touch and elements of fantasy of this frame have been achieved by a master carver following an outstanding design. By the middle of the 18th century carving had become highly developed. The London Tradesman (1747) stated that there is 'a class of carvers who do nothing else but carve frames for looking glasses'.
