Code: M43 - Kent Dolphin Pedestal
This handsome carved pedestal has a square, carved and dentil-moulded top. The front and back is finely carved with entwined dolphins below scallop shells. The base of complex leaf carved compound moulded plinths. Dolphins, as a form of decoration, grew in popularity following the Battle of the Nile in 1798 when Nelson, then a Rear Admiral, achieved a notable victory over the French. A suite of furniture, incorporating carved dolphins, was made by William Collins in 1813 and presented by John Fish to Greenwich Hospital in memory of Nelson.
