This plain carved gilt-wood and ebonised convex looking glass has a leaf carved moulded inner frame and a compound moulded outer frame with decorative gilded balls punctuating the bronzed ground.

The use of stained and ebonised woods to imitate expensive bronze and ebony began during the Renaissance and found popularity during the Regency period in Fngland. Ebony, a heavy, fine grained timber was fashionable in France for furniture-making during the 17th century. The French word, ébèniste, cabinet-maker, is derived from their use of ebony.
