A George I style carved gilt-wood and gesso looking glass. The mirror plate is in a leaf and shell carved moulded frame beneath a shaped cresting centred by a pierced plume on a moulded plinth. The textured groundwork is surrounded by tendrils and leaves and with leaf and scroll carved corners; the apron is decorated with a scallop shell and leaves.

The development from the relatively plain styles of the reign of Queen Anne, to the more elaborate designs of George I are evident in this mirror. Gesso, normally a composition of gypsum and size, forms the basis of most gilded finishes. In this case additional layers of gesso have been added to the ground and carved into the surface. This form of decoration was popular in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
