Code: M37 - Regency Eagle Pier Mirror
This rectangular pier mirror illustrates the transitional styles that bridge looking glass designs of the late 18th and eary 19th centuries. The mirror plate is set between classical columns with leaf carved capitals headed by paterae and leaf decorated, classical urns. The cresting is formed of an eagle, supported by a gathered acanthus leaf carved spray, raised on a reclangular panel decorated wilh drapery. Glass making in England developed quickly from 1777 when The British Cast Plate Glass Company was formed at St Helens in Lancashire. Following the French development of pouring glass onto a metal table or bed, larger and cheaper mirror plates were produced in England.
