Code: M29 - Regency Marble Top Table

An early 19th century design carved and gilded centre table with an inlaid specimen marble top. The top is inset with numerous radiating panels of specimen marbles within a broad floral band and Portor marble banding. The turned and reeded stem with carved collars is raised on a scrolling tripod base decorated with acanthus leaf scrolls and paterae.

Similar specimen marble tops were bought by members of the British aristocracy while on the Grand Tour in Italy during the early 19th century. These Grand Tour trophies were carefully transported home, often by sea, and English craftsmen created bases to display them.
