Code: M28 - Chippendale Gainsborough Chair
This handsome carved mahogany library or 'Gainsborough' armchair has a gently curving back and shaped arms which have acanthus leaf carved, scrolled handles and leaf carved moulded supports. The padded seat is raised on moulded cabriole legs decorated with carved cabochons, leaves and scrolls and stands on tightly scrolled toes. Finished and wax polished in the traditional 18th century manner, the craftsmen who made this chair have achieved a fitting tribute to the grandeur of Georgian England. This chair was inspired by the designs of Thomas Chippendale who illustrated a similar chair in his Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd Edition. 1762, plate XIX.
