Code: M22 - Regency Tatham Lamp
An English Regency carved wood table lamp in the manner of Thomas Tatham. This carved seated griffin which is also an heraldic symbol for watchfulness and courage, is raised on an egg and dart moulded plinth. Charles Heathcote Tatham, (1772-1842) an architect and designer, was instrumental in the creation of the Regency style. Tatham studied in Rome between 1794 and 1797 where he made a number of drawings of ancient monuments. A drawing of a table base in the Vatican by Tatham dated 1799 shows an almost identical griffin that has inspired this lamp.
