Code: M2 - Regency Leopard Mask Convex Mirror
This convex looking glass displays a wealth of Regency decoration. The carved gilt-wood, compound moulded outer frame has
a reeded ebonised inner slip frame and a cresting centred by an ebonised leopard mask within a ribbon wrapped circular
frame. The spiral supports to each side are decorated with anthemion tips, carved fans, leaf clasps, husks and grapes. The
carved apron is centred by a double winged solar disk representing the Ancient Egyptian God Horus. The fashion for Ancient Egyptian decorative motifs made their European debut during the 1780s and 1790s and was quickly
assimilated by English designers. Napoleon's North African campaigns of 1798 and the publication in 1802 of Voyage dans la
base et la Egypten, published by V.Denon, fuelled the fashion in both France and England.
