Code: M17 - Queen Anne Pier Glass
The shaped looking glass in this Queen Anne style mirror has a plain carved gilt-wood moulded frame. The finely carved cresting of acanthus leaves is centred by a shell, raised on gathered leaves. During the early 18th century the size of mirror glass was an indication of wealth and was the main point of competition between glass factories. The Vauxhail Glassworks advertised in February 1700. 'Large looking glass plates, the like never made in Fngland before, both for size and goodness'. Mirror number 17 would have been a substantial purchase during the reign of Queen Anne.
