This window bench, or long stool, is taken directly from a design by Thomas Hope (1769-1831). The fluted seat rails are supported by reeded legs, filled with turned discs on crossed, reeded frames. The legs are decorated with paterae and raised on turned feet.

Thomas Hope spent some eight years travelling in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean where he developed a passion for Greek art and architecture. His archaeological studies led him to copy ancient furniture in an accurate manner. The design for this bench is from his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, published in 1807, plate 12, figure no 7.
