George III Linnell Oval Mirror - Large

A carved, oval, gilt-wood mirror in the style of George III and the late eighteenth century. The moulded frame is enriched with carved guilloche decoration, flanked by an inner bead moulding and an outer water leaf, all within a squared moulded edge.

The oval simplicity of this frame echoes the Neo-Classical inspiration of Robert Adam. Adam's exclusive designs were popularised by George Hepplewhite (died 1786), in his Cabinet-Maker and upholsterer's Guide, first published by his widow in 1788. Other great names of the period, such as John Linnell, (1729-96), and in his later years, Thomas Johnson (1714-c1788), employed simple, classical, oval moulded frames decorated with waterleaves and guilloche, all of which were references to Greek and Roman architectural ornament.
