Code: M10 - George III Oak Leaf Mirror
The carved gilt-wood crossed boughs of branches that form the frame of this looking glass are decorated with oak leaves and acorns and are held at the base by a pierced cartouche. The ribbon tied top supports the leaf carved cresting of leaves. Based on the designs of the mid 18th century, this gilt-wood looking glass design incorporates elements of drawings by Mayhew and Ince, Linnell and Johnson all of whom were exponents of the Rococo. The crossed oak branches of this mirror frame reflect the nationally important role that British oak has played in the history, literature and identity of the nation.
